Story details
The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the report Crosscurrents: Navigating the AI–Water–Energy Nexus on 7 October. The ministry said it was prepared by the UAE Permanent Mission to the United Nations with analysis from Eurasia Group. It is a follow-up to the UAE’s 2023 report on water scarcity and global security.
The report examines water use along the AI value chain, including semiconductor manufacturing and the power generation needed to run AI systems, and discusses how AI tools could support water-system efficiency, leak detection, forecasting and infrastructure planning. It also points to renewable and other lower-water energy systems as possible ways to reduce the water intensity of AI power. Its recommendations are presented ahead of the UAE-Senegal co-hosted UN Water Conference scheduled in Abu Dhabi for 8–10 December 2026; the announcement does not establish that the proposals were adopted.
