Story details

The North Sea Transition Authority opened an eight-week consultation on 5 October on a draft emissions-reduction plan for the UK Continental Shelf. The proposed areas include investment and operational efficiency, platform electrification and lower-carbon power, emissions inventories, and flaring and venting.

The authority says platform power generation accounted for 79% of offshore-platform emissions in 2022. It estimates that electrification could cut emissions by up to 2 million tonnes per year by 2030; this is a projection, not a measured reduction.

The consultation applies to the UKCS as a whole, not Scotland alone. It asks for views on proposed priorities for industry and regulators rather than announcing completed projects or mandatory new requirements.

The consultation is scheduled to close on 30 November 2026. The draft plan’s proposals and NSTA’s estimates should be distinguished from actual emissions data that may be reported in later years.
