Story details
QatarEnergy said on October 8 that a consortium with Petrobras won seven exploration blocks in Brazil’s sixth Concession Open Acreage Bid Round. The blocks are in the Ceará Basin on the country’s northeastern Equatorial Margin. The announcement came from Doha, but the acreage is in Brazil; the award adds prospective exploration area rather than reporting a discovery or production.
The company listed blocks CE-M-471, CE-M-473, CE-M-475, CE-M-477, CE-M-537, CE-M-539 and CE-M-665. QatarEnergy is to hold a 30% participating interest, while Petrobras is the 70% operator. Their combined area is approximately 4,700 square kilometres, with water depths reported at about 2,000 to 3,600 metres.
The scale and ownership describe an exploration position, not reserves or a commercial project. QatarEnergy’s statement frames the acreage as an addition to its Brazilian upstream portfolio. Further geological work would be needed before the partners could establish whether any block contains a viable accumulation.
The concession contracts are expected to be signed in the first half of 2027. Until then, the announced bid result is distinct from executed contract terms, exploration drilling, a discovery, or a development decision. The company’s announcement and QNA account provide no production forecast for these blocks.
