Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported on 10 October that Qatar National Bank’s weekly report sees South Korea adapting to shifts in global trade as exports reach records and semiconductor shipments rise. QNA said South Korean exports exceeded US$100 billion in June for the first time, up 70.9% year on year; information and communications technology exports made up more than half of total exports for the first time. The country recorded US$709.7 billion in total exports last year.
The report attributed much of the growth to memory chips used in artificial intelligence systems. It said Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix together account for about 73% of the global high-bandwidth memory market. QNB’s analysis, as summarized by QNA, also cautioned that dependence on a narrow export range increases exposure to trade disruption and competition. These figures describe South Korea’s trade and the bank’s assessment; they do not measure chip output in Qatar or establish a forecast.
