Story details

American Electric Power announced an expanded US$100 billion capital plan for 2027–2031 on 28 October alongside third-quarter results. The utility reported GAAP earnings of US$1.187 billion, compared with US$972 million a year earlier. Operating earnings were US$1.216 billion, a non-GAAP measure that excludes specified items.

The investment programme includes approximately US$37 billion for transmission, US$36 billion for generation and US$22 billion for distribution. AEP expects its regulated rate base to reach US$162 billion by 2031. These are planned investments and a projected regulatory asset base, rather than spending already completed.

AEP signed 15 gigawatts of new load commitments during the quarter and expects incremental contracted load to reach 84 gigawatts by 2031. Its definition requires executed electric-service agreements or letters of agreement. Contracted demand is different from measured electricity consumption or generating capacity already supplying customers.

The company expects large-load take-or-pay contracts in vertically integrated states to offset up to US$21 billion of fixed costs for existing residential customers over their lifetimes. It also introduced expected annual operating earnings-per-share growth of 9–11% for 2027–2031. These future benefits and growth rates depend on customer demand, project delivery and regulatory outcomes.
