Story details

Brazil’s National Treasury paid R$79.95 million in August on credit operations of states and municipalities guaranteed by the federal Union, the Finance Ministry reported on 15 September. A federal guarantee means the Union pays the creditor when the original public borrower does not meet the covered obligation.

Since 2016, the government has paid R$89.66 billion under such guarantees, according to the ministry. The monthly figure records payments made in August; it is distinct from the total debt stock of the states and municipalities.
