Story details

INEOS announced the commercial opening of Greensand on 18 September 2026. The project, led by INEOS Energy with Harbour Energy and Nordsøfonden, expects to store up to 400,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually in its first commercial phase. This is an expected capacity, not a measured annual injection total.

CO₂ is sourced primarily from Danish biomethane plants, liquefied and trucked to the Esbjerg terminal, then shipped aboard Carbon Destroyer 1 for injection into Nini West. The depleted oil reservoir lies about 250 kilometres offshore and roughly 1,800 metres below the seabed; the latter is a reservoir-location reference, not a reported measured well depth.

The announcement describes potential later expansion to 4–8 million tonnes per year. Those volumes remain a future scale-up possibility. Actual stored mass, operating availability and verified net emissions outcomes require separate measurements.
