Egyptian battery maker BME and China’s CATL signed a contract on September 13 to establish a battery systems plant. The first phase is planned for annual capacity of 1 gigawatt-hour and investment above EGP 2 billion, reported by SIS as about US$39 million.
A second phase is planned to raise annual capacity to 5 gigawatt-hours and add passenger-car and renewable-energy storage batteries. The project targets 40% local content. The government said the facility is expected to supply both domestic and foreign markets.
A September 6 Cabinet research bulletin said supply-chain resilience, energy and technology security and reduced dependence on single sources are increasingly shaping trade and investment. It highlighted local value added as a measure beyond export growth.
