Story details

The government announced on 10 September that mayors and leaders of Foundation Strategic Authorities in England would be able to introduce a levy on overnight visitor stays. The levy is intended to let local areas reinvest visitor-related revenue in services, public spaces and tourism priorities.

The charge must be calculated as a percentage of accommodation cost rather than a flat amount, and local leaders may offer exemptions such as campsites. Temporary accommodation and shelters are excluded. A bill is expected in due course; authorities are expected to publish spending plans by early 2028, so the power is not yet an operating tax.
