Story details

Eni announced on September 24 that it secured a 100% interest in Indonesia’s Sapukala block in the Kutei Basin. The offshore area lies in approximately 1,000–2,500 metres of water.

Eni reports completing a new seismic acquisition programme covering the block to support exploration assessment. This is a licence award, rather than an announcement of a Sapukala discovery, proved reserve volume or production start.

Eni says it secured the block in Indonesia’s first oil and gas licensing round of 2026. The company says it completed a joint study with an Indonesian academic institution under local rules before entering the direct-offer phase. This describes how the licence was awarded; it is not a drilling result or reserve certification.

Sapukala sits beside areas operated by or partly owned by Eni and near the company’s planned North Hub development. That proximity provides regional operating context, but resources associated with North Hub should not be attributed to Sapukala. Each licence in the Kutei Basin needs to be assessed on its own evidence.

Eni’s wider Indonesian operations do not change the exploration status of this new licence. The Eni–Petronas Searah partnership brings together gas assets in Indonesia and Malaysia; production figures for that portfolio are not forecasts for Sapukala. The concrete steps disclosed for Sapukala are the licence award and the completed seismic acquisition programme.

The release confirms a 100% licence interest for Eni, but it does not announce a future investment decision or commercial production. Further seismic interpretation and any later exploration programme would shape the next assessment steps. The company has not provided a schedule or capital figure for those steps. The licence should therefore not be counted as new production capacity on the information currently disclosed.
