Story details

Iraq's Oil Exploration Company announced on 23 July 2026 that its sixth seismic team had completed three-dimensional survey work in exploration Block 9 in Basra province. The project was conducted for Kuwait Energy and covered 380.49 square kilometres. The company reported completion of the full planned fieldwork, providing a defined acquisition milestone for the block.

The official account says field activity began on 27 December 2025. The July announcement therefore marks the completion of a program started in the previous year, not a new survey that began and finished on the announcement date. The coverage figure is an area in square kilometres and should not be compared directly with the line-kilometre figures used for a two-dimensional survey.

Three-dimensional acquisition provides spatial information that can support subsurface interpretation and subsequent well planning. The relevance to drilling is the dataset's potential role in selecting and assessing targets. However, acquisition completion does not itself prove a commercial discovery or establish recoverable reserves. The source does not publish processed seismic volumes, interpreted prospects or the operator's next drilling commitments.

For industry users, the disclosure identifies the client, acquisition company, block, province, survey type and completed area. It does not provide contract value, exact future well coordinates or a production forecast. Processing, interpretation and operational decisions are later steps that would need separate evidence. Recording the survey as completed fieldwork preserves a useful project milestone without converting it into a count of drilled wells. Further operator or company announcements would be needed to show how the acquired data is used and whether it leads to an approved exploration or development campaign.
