Story details
Kamoa Copper published a Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) public disclosure for its Kakula tailings storage facility on 30 September. The facility is in Lualaba province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The document covers design, management, monitoring, risk assessment and emergency preparedness.
In the company’s July 2026 assessment, the facility fully met 69 of the 77 GISTM requirements, for an overall conformance level of 84%. Kamoa Copper said it is addressing the remaining requirements through structured action plans.
The disclosure classifies the facility as high consequence and describes a fully contained valley dam with downstream-raised embankments. Its closure spillway is designed to pass a one-in-10,000-year storm event. Cell 1 is active, with deposition to Cells 2 and 3 scheduled for the second half of 2026.
The company also describes independent engineering oversight, annual technical reviews, monitoring of water and air quality, and a community grievance procedure. These details are reported from the company’s own disclosure and are not presented as an independent audit finding.
