Story details

Equinor reported a gas discovery at Gullfaks South on 8 October 2026. Its estimated recoverable volume is 0.5–1.6 million standard cubic metres of oil equivalent, also expressed as 3.3–10.3 million barrels of oil equivalent. These are resource-volume equivalents, rather than a gas flow rate.

The exploration well, 34/10-D-4 BH, was drilled as a sidetrack in connection with drilling a production well, using Askeladden. A sidetrack is a branch of a wellbore; this announcement should not be counted as an additional independent physical well without qualification.

The discovery is about 190 kilometres northwest of Bergen, within the Gullfaks licence held by Equinor, Petoro and OMV. The stated range does not establish proved reserves, a development decision or commercial production.
