Story details

Equinor announced on 7 October 2026 an updated Snøhvit Future investment estimate of NOK 26.5 billion in 2026 value. Onshore compression is still planned to start in 2029 and electrification in 2030. These are project estimates and scheduled start dates, rather than final audited expenditure or newly operating capacity.

The operator reports that the project is about 60% complete and that its compressor module was installed in August. Work at the operating Hammerfest LNG facility, weather and difficult rock conditions in the power-cable tunnel affected costs and progress. Physical completion is not the same as the share of the budget already spent.

Compression is intended to maintain plateau LNG production as reservoir pressure declines. Electrification is expected to reduce annual CO₂ emissions by 850,000 tonnes; that is a future project-level outcome, not a measured reduction at a well. Equinor puts the original 2022 estimate of NOK 13.2 billion at NOK 15.2 billion in current money, preserving the distinction between nominal and comparable-price budgets.
