Story details
Petróleo Brasileiro SA, known as Petrobras, officially announced the completion of exploratory drilling at the Morpho prospect, resulting in a confirmed third oil discovery within the same exploratory well bore. The milestone well is situated in exploration Block FZA-M-59, located in the deep waters of the Foz do Amazonas Basin along Brazil's northern Equatorial Margin. Drilling was successfully conducted in an extreme ultra-deepwater setting featuring a water depth of 2,886 metres, located approximately 175 kilometres off the coastline of the State of Amapá.
The sequential discovery at the Morpho well follows earlier hydrocarbon intercepts confirmed during initial drilling phases in August and early October 2026. The latest drilling phase successfully penetrated deeper exploratory targets, identifying high-quality sandstone reservoirs saturated with light crude oil. Extensive geological logging-while-drilling data, fluid sampling and downhole formation pressure measurements were acquired across the newly identified reservoir intervals, confirming the continuity of hydrocarbon migration systems throughout the Foz do Amazonas deep-water turbidite play.
Following the successful conclusion of all planned data acquisition and testing objectives, Petrobras commenced standardized well abandonment procedures in full compliance with operational safety and environmental protocols mandated by the federal environmental authority, IBAMA. The contracted ultra-deepwater drillship NS-42 will be demobilised from the Foz do Amazonas Basin and navigated south to the Potiguar Basin off the coast of Rio Grande do Norte, where it is scheduled to commence drilling the high-priority Mae de Ouro offshore exploration prospect.
Petrobras technical leadership emphasized that the positive results from Morpho corroborate the company's long-term exploration thesis regarding the world-class hydrocarbon resource potential of Brazil's Equatorial Margin. The region shares geological, geochemical and stratigraphic characteristics with the prolific deep-water oil provinces discovered across the conjugate margin in Guyana and Suriname. The company will now integrate geochemical assays and seismic calibration data to model accumulation volumes and evaluate future appraisal drilling programmes.
