Story details

ReconAfrica reported on September 28 that the Jarvie-1 rig had resumed operations at Kavango West 1X in Namibia. Work in the existing vertical bore had begun with casing removal. The planned horizontal sidetrack is a further test of that discovery, rather than a separate discovery well.

The design envisages up to 1,000 metres of horizontal bore to intersect natural fractures. A whipstock is to be set at roughly 2,500 metres, with open-hole completion planned. Drilling could start in October, subject to regulatory approvals and equipment arrival, and is expected to take about a month. Flow testing would follow completion.

Samples from earlier Huttenberg and Elandshoek tests indicate thermogenic gas, according to the company. The new test is intended to establish sustained flow, liquid yield and formation-pressure response. The announcement provides no new sustained production rate or measured liquid yield: those remain objectives of the planned programme.
