Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Energy and Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources, met Australian Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen in Jeddah. According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) on 28 September, the talks focused on climate cooperation in connection with the 31st Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP31), scheduled to be held in Türkiye in November this year.
The ministers discussed advancing the objectives and principles of the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement, with a view to inclusive, balanced and practical outcomes that take member states’ national circumstances into account. They also reviewed Saudi Arabia’s renewable energy deployment, emissions management, reduction and removal, the Saudi Green Initiative and the Circular Carbon Economy approach.
During the visit, Bowen toured the Shuaibah Solar Power Project, one of the largest projects under the National Renewable Energy Program, as well as Historic Jeddah and KAUST.
The announcement does not mention any agreement signed or new commitment made between the two countries.
