Story details
TotalEnergies SE announced the formal execution of farm-out agreements to acquire a 30 percent participating interest and the designated operatorship of two major offshore gas discoveries, Lang Lebah and B14, located in the shallow and deep waters off the coast of Sarawak, Malaysia. The strategic farm-in transactions were signed with national energy corporation PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd, Thailand's PTTEP and Kuwait's KUFPEC. The farm-in establishes TotalEnergies as the operating entity responsible for leading technical engineering and project execution across both fields.
The Lang Lebah discovery represents one of the largest offshore natural gas discoveries made in Malaysia over recent decades, while the adjacent B14 field provides immediate operational synergy. Both assets will be developed as a single integrated offshore gas megaproject utilising centralized processing platforms, subsea gathering systems and offshore export trunklines. Subsurface reservoir evaluations indicate that the unified development will commercialise more than 6.5 trillion cubic feet of recoverable natural gas resources, a volume equivalent to more than 1 billion barrels of oil equivalent.
The integrated development is designed to deliver a steady-state production plateau of approximately 10 billion cubic metres per annum of marketable natural gas. Produced gas will be transported directly via offshore transmission pipelines to supply the world-class Malaysia LNG liquefaction complex located in Bintulu, Sarawak, for onward distribution to key industrial energy consumers across Asia-Pacific. Following formal closing and regulatory approvals, equity interests will comprise TotalEnergies as operator with 30 percent, PTTEP with 25 percent, KUFPEC with 25 percent and PETRONAS Carigali retaining 20 percent.
TotalEnergies highlighted that this acquisition directly advances its corporate strategy of developing low-cost, low-emissions upstream natural gas resources with access to long-term Asian LNG markets. The development concept integrates offshore carbon capture and storage technologies and electrified gas processing systems to minimize direct greenhouse gas emissions. The operating partners will progress front-end engineering design throughout 2027 in preparation for taking a final investment decision.
