Story details
Woodside Energy Group Ltd announced that the offshore Scarborough Energy Project and associated onshore Pluto Train 2 LNG facility in Western Australia have achieved over seventy-five percent overall construction completion. The offshore development, located approximately three hundred and seventy-five kilometers off the Pilbara coast in the Carnarvon Basin, will commercialize an estimated eight trillion cubic feet of dry offshore natural gas containing less than 0.1 percent carbon dioxide.
Offshore installation activities progressed with the successful deployment of deepwater subsea trees, manifolds, and the completion of extensive trunkline laying operations. The semi-submersible Floating Production Unit hull has arrived in regional waters following module integration and comprehensive dry dock commissioning tests, preparing for offshore mooring and subsequent riser hookup across twelve subsea development wells.
At the Pluto LNG facility near Karratha, civil and structural works for Pluto Train 2 are advancing rapidly, with all major refrigeration compressor trains, heat exchangers, and cryogenic fractionator columns positioned on their respective foundations. The expanded liquefaction train adds five million tonnes per annum of processing capacity, dedicated to processing Scarborough gas for long-term export contracts with key Asian utilities.
Environmental compliance telemetry confirms that atmospheric emissions abatement systems, flare gas recovery technologies, and dry low-emissions turbines operate within certified regulatory parameters authorized by the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority. Furthermore, the development features an integrated battery energy storage system to buffer electrical load swings across onshore processing compressors.
Woodside reiterated that natural gas remains an indispensable transition fuel, supplying baseload electricity generation and industrial heating while supporting regional coal-to-gas switching throughout Asia-Pacific markets. The company confirmed that target schedules remain fully aligned for achieving first cargo deliveries of liquefied natural gas during the 2026 calendar year.
