Story details
Kuwait and Bahrain have begun work on national plans under the Kigali Amendment, according to a United Nations Development Programme release published on 1 October. Their National Ozone Units, UNDP teams and technical experts met in Kuwait City on 29 September to discuss available information on hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) use, data still to be collected and technical work needed to set priorities. Both countries ratified the amendment in 2024.
The plans are intended to examine HFC imports and use across sectors, existing management systems, and possible policies, technical support and investment. The process will also consider refrigerant alternatives with lower climate impact and opportunities to improve energy efficiency. UNDP says the next phase will gather and review national data, consult relevant sectors and identify possible measures; the release reports planning and consultation work, not completed HFC reductions or measured energy savings.
