Story details
WAM reported on 6 October that the UAE Embassy in the Maldives and the Maldivian Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy had organised a virtual energy roundtable. The UAE side included Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) and Global South Utilities; the Maldivian side included the State Electric Company Ltd (STELCO).
Participants discussed grid modernisation, smart grids, battery storage and ways to reduce diesel dependence. They also explored desalination projects across 40 islands, water and sewerage networks, renewable-power integration and regional waste-to-energy facilities. WAM described these as discussion areas and potential cooperation, not awarded or completed projects.
The UAE representative cited Masdar’s global target of 100 GW of clean-energy capacity by 2030. That company-wide target is distinct from the exploratory discussion of possible Maldives projects; the report announced no capacity commitment or project award for the islands.
