Story details
The Reserve Bank of Australia launched a consultation on 3 September about the role of its Reserve Bank Information and Transfer System (RITS) in a tokenised financial ecosystem. It is seeking views on how central-bank settlement services could support tokenised assets and private money while preserving safety, efficiency and financial stability. Responses are due by 30 October 2026.
In a separate update with the Treasury, the RBA concluded that Australia’s retail payments system serves households and businesses well and found no clear public-interest case for a retail central bank digital currency. The assessment drew on public consultation about payment needs and potential CBDC features.
