Story details
Champion Iron Limited announced its operational and financial results for the second quarter of fiscal year 2027, covering the three-month period ended 30 September 2026. Consolidated production of high-purity iron ore concentrate reached 3.9 million wet metric tonnes, driven by stable mining and processing throughput at the Bloom Lake Mining Complex in Quebec alongside newly integrated production from the Rana Gruber operations in Norway. The quarter marked an important commercial milestone with the successful execution of the company's inaugural commercial vessel shipment of Direct Reduction Pellet Feed (DRPF).
Consolidated quarterly sales volume expanded to an all-time company record of 4.5 million dry metric tonnes, representing a robust 35 percent increase compared to the previous quarter. The substantial sales volume surge successfully drew down built-up port inventories and demonstrated strong international steelmaker demand for high-grade direct reduction iron products that reduce emissions in electric arc furnace steelmaking. High-purity iron concentrates with low silica and alumina contents continue to command pricing premiums over standard 62 percent iron benchmark indices.
Financial performance for the quarter reflected broader cyclical pressures across global iron ore markets. Champion Iron recorded total consolidated revenues of 403.9 million Canadian dollars for the three-month period. Financial margins were compressed by subdued global benchmark iron ore prices, elevated ocean freight costs and commissioning expenditures associated with expanding processing facilities. Adjusted EBITDA for the quarter stood at 23.3 million Canadian dollars, and management resolved to maintain a prudent capital allocation strategy by not declaring an interim semi-annual dividend.
Leadership emphasised that capital discipline remains paramount as the company focuses on optimizing its recent industrial investments and strengthening balance sheet liquidity. In addition to commercialising high-grade DRPF from Bloom Lake, Champion Iron is progressing metallurgical studies and infrastructure alignments to upgrade output at Rana Gruber. With modern processing circuits capable of delivering premium iron ore feeds required for green steel manufacturing, the company is structurally positioned to benefit from the decarbonisation of global metallurgical supply chains.
