Story details

The European Central Bank said on 21 September it had started preparatory work to invest a small portion of its own funds in tokenised securities. The stated aim is to gain practical investor experience and build institutional expertise in distributed-ledger technology.

Initial investments are expected to focus on euro-denominated securities issued by euro-area public authorities, agencies and European supranational institutions. Settlement is planned in central-bank money through Pontes, the Eurosystem solution for tokenised-asset settlement. The ECB Executive Board will decide timing and operational details after preparation is complete.
