Story details

Egypt’s Nuclear Power Plants Authority (NPPA) said on 24 October that installation had begun for the pressuriser in the primary circuit of the first unit at the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant. The work is taking place inside the reactor building. The authority described it as another step in installing the unit’s principal reactor components. The announcement coincided with Egypt Forum 2026.

A pressuriser helps regulate and maintain coolant pressure in a pressurised-water reactor’s primary circuit within operating limits. NPPA put the component’s weight at about 200 tonnes and the primary-circuit operating pressure at around 161 bar. It said the pressuriser helps limit pressure fluctuations and works alongside protection, control and nuclear-safety systems to support stable operation and component integrity.

The authority said the installation followed completion, a few days earlier, of the four steam generators for Unit 1. Steam generators transfer heat from the primary circuit to a separate secondary circuit. The 24 October notice reports an installation milestone; it does not say the unit has started producing electricity or connected to the grid. The development therefore concerns construction and equipment placement, not commercial operation.

El Dabaa is part of Egypt’s plan to diversify electricity generation. NPPA has described the project as four VVER-1200 units, each designed for 1,200 megawatts of capacity. Those figures describe planned installed capacity, not electricity already generated. The authority’s 24 October notice did not give a firm start-up date for Unit 1, a revised project schedule or a new estimate of the plant’s contribution to national supply.

Installing a large reactor component is a meaningful construction step because it allows work on the primary circuit to proceed toward later integration and testing. It does not, by itself, show that the whole circuit is complete, that nuclear fuel has been loaded, that regulatory tests have been passed or that the reactor is ready for operation. These are separate technical and licensing stages.

NPPA chairman Sherif Helmy said the milestone reflected Egypt’s goals of strengthening energy security and diversifying electricity sources. That is the authority chairman’s characterization of the project. The announcement did not provide a cost update, a local-sourcing share, a unit-completion percentage or a near-term power-output forecast. Those measures cannot be inferred from the installation announcement alone.

The plant’s construction sequence involves installing major pressurised-water-reactor components and then verifying integrated systems under applicable quality and regulatory processes. The directly reported facts here are that pressuriser installation began, the component weighs about 200 tonnes, and the stated primary-circuit operating pressure is around 161 bar. Further milestones should be assessed against later dated NPPA and regulator notices that specify what work has actually been completed.
