Story details

GE Vernova will supply 16 turbines for ESB’s Chleansaid onshore wind farm in the Scottish Highlands. In its September 3 announcement, the company listed the project’s total capacity as 96 megawatts. Each machine is from the 6.1 MW Cypress platform with a 158-metre rotor. The order will be the first deployment of GE Vernova’s Cypress turbine in the United Kingdom. The company said the order was booked in the third quarter of 2026.

The agreement covers turbine supply and a 20-year services arrangement. The turbines will be manufactured in Germany. Because the project is in a remote location with challenging logistics, each unit will use GE Vernova’s split-blade technology. The approach is intended to make larger blades easier to transport, allowing a large-rotor design to be used at remote sites. GE Vernova says the design aims to improve energy capture, but it has not published a forecast for annual output or a capacity factor for Chleansaid.

Chleansaid is described as the first UK installation of GE Vernova’s 6 MW onshore turbine platform. The manufacturer reports that more than 1,800 turbines in this product class have been deployed globally and that the product family has accumulated over 38 million operating hours. Those are company-wide portfolio figures, not operating results measured at Chleansaid.

The project adds to a long-standing relationship between ESB and GE Vernova. ESB calls Chleansaid its first wholly developed onshore wind project in Scotland and a milestone in its renewable energy ambitions. An ESB representative said the project was moving into construction. That statement does not mean the wind farm is complete or producing electricity; the announcement focuses on the turbine supply and services agreement.

Split blades are a logistical feature within that strategy: they ease transport while retaining the advantages of a larger rotor. The order also establishes a planned 20-year service relationship, although the announcement does not set out availability guarantees, spare-parts provisions or a commissioning schedule. Further indicators for Chleansaid will therefore be construction progress, turbine installation and actual operating data once the wind farm is built.
