Story details

Kibali gold mine in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo generated $1.1 billion in economic value for the country in 2025, according to Barrick Mining Corporation’s economic contributions statement published on 9 September. The company defines the total as taxes, royalties, dividends, salaries and local procurement.

Barrick also reported $15.8 billion in economic contributions across 17 host countries in 2025, including $5.0 billion in taxes and royalties. Spending with suppliers reached $7.1 billion, and the company said more than 7,400 host-country suppliers received that procurement spending.

The Congo figure is a Kibali-specific amount within Barrick’s global contribution tally; it does not measure the country’s entire mining sector. Barrick’s definition of economic contributions also includes dividends to the state, community investment, employee payments and in-country purchasing.

The figures come from the company’s own reporting. The announcement cites Barrick’s 2025 Tax Contribution Report rather than an independent audit or national accounts published by the Congolese government.
