Story details

Sonangol E.P. and contractor group partners announced the formal commencement of a major deepwater infill redevelopment drilling program in Block 14, located roughly 100 kilometers offshore Cabinda in water depths ranging from 200 to 1,500 meters. The offshore concession is operated by Cabinda Gulf Oil Company Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Chevron Corporation, holding a 31 percent interest alongside Sonangol Pesquisa e Producao with 20 percent, Eni Angola with 20 percent, TotalEnergies with 20 percent, and Galp Energia with 9 percent.

The campaign utilizes a high-specification seventh-generation dynamic-positioning drillship to drill five subsea infill production wells and three water injection wells targeting bypassed Miocene turbidite sandstone reservoirs. Advanced 4D ocean bottom node seismic data acquired over the Benguela-Belize-Lobito-Tomboco hub guided well trajectory design, identifying un-swept oil accumulations in compartmentalized structural fault blocks. The infill campaign is engineered to arrest natural basin production decline, adding an estimated 32,000 barrels of oil per day of high-margin sweet crude production by late 2027.

Project engineering specifications include upgraded subsea tree assemblies rated for 10,000 psi working pressure, insulated flexible flowlines, and subsea multiphase boosting pumps that tie back directly into the Benguela-Belize compliant piled tower platform. Associated natural gas produced from the infill wells will be routed into regional gathering infrastructure feeding the Angola LNG liquefaction terminal in Soyo, eliminating continuous routine gas flaring in compliance with national environmental regulations.

Sonangol leadership affirmed that rejuvenating mature offshore blocks through state-of-the-art reservoir management and subsea tiebacks represents a cost-effective strategy to sustain Angola's national oil output above 1.1 million barrels per day. The concession partners have committed substantial local content provisions, allocating offshore fabrication packages to Sonamet and Petromar marine yards in Lobito and Ambriz to maximize domestic engineering employment and supply chain participation.
