Employment in Canada fell by 42,000, or 0.2%, in August 2026, and the employment rate slipped 0.1 percentage points to 60.8%, Statistics Canada reported. The unemployment rate was unchanged at 6.4%.

Job losses included 19,000 among youth aged 15 to 24, while manufacturing added 22,000 positions. Average hourly wages rose 2.0% from a year earlier to $37.02. The survey also noted a cumulative employment gain of 181,000 from April through July.
