Story details

Canada and Ontario announced an $8.7 billion package on 21 October to support steel, automotive and critical-minerals industries. The steel measures include five-year commitments of $3.55 billion from the federal government and $1.67 billion from Ontario, alongside procurement preferences and stronger monitoring of unfair imports.

For vehicle manufacturing, the governments set aside an additional $2.5 billion over two years for capital projects, split between up to $1.5 billion federally and $1 billion provincially. They also said light-duty vehicle emissions standards will stay at 2026 levels through model year 2029, with annual increases resuming in 2030. For Northern Ontario, Ottawa will match up to $1 billion in provincial road funding over three years for the Ring of Fire region. These are announced commitments and policy measures; they do not establish that the funded projects or road are already built.
