Story details
The UK government confirmed £91 million on 15 September for 14 English councils facing significant financial pressure. The authorities already receive Exceptional Financial Support and can use the new funding over two years to modernise high-cost services, including temporary accommodation and adult social care.
The allocation is split between £41 million in 2026–27 and £50 million in 2027–28. Projects include home technology to help Redbridge residents live independently and changes to frontline social work in Stoke-on-Trent. The announcement presents targeted council support; it does not set out a general grant for every local authority.
