Story details
Equinor Energy AS and its joint venture partners announced that a new appraisal well drilled on the Afrodite gas and condensate discovery has materially expanded the known resource base. The successful appraisal operation, executed in production licence 293 B in the northern North Sea, indicates that recoverable gas and condensate volumes are more than twice as large as initial estimates. Recoverable volumes are now calculated to range between 77 million and 180 million barrels of oil equivalent, corresponding to approximately 12 billion to 29 billion standard cubic metres of marketable hydrocarbons.
The Afrodite discovery is situated in close geographic proximity to the established Kvitebjørn production complex, an operational vantage point that provides direct strategic optionality for development. Appraisal well 34/4-18 S was drilled using a modern semi-submersible drilling rig to delineate the reservoir architecture and assess reservoir continuity across tight sandstone formations. Total in-place hydrocarbon volumes within the reservoir structure are estimated to be approximately three times larger than recoverable reserves, reflecting petrophysical recovery constraints that are typical of tight reservoir dynamics in the northern North Sea basin.
Following positive appraisal results, Equinor officially confirmed that the Afrodite accumulation is considered commercially viable for commercial development. The operator and its partnership have initiated technical evaluations focused on developing Afrodite as a standardized subsea tie-back directly connected to the existing Kvitebjørn processing platform. Utilising existing infrastructure offers significant economic and environmental efficiencies, allowing recovered natural gas to be routed through existing export trunklines directly to the onshore processing terminal at Kollsnes for onward distribution to European industrial and household consumers.
Equity ownership in production licence 293 B reflects a diversified partnership of active continental shelf operators. Equinor Energy AS serves as the designated operator of the licence with a controlling 60 percent equity interest, while ORLEN Upstream Norway AS holds a 25 percent interest, DNO Norway AS maintains a 10 percent interest, and Wellesley Petroleum AS holds the remaining 5 percent working interest after successfully operating the appraisal drilling phase. The partnership will now progress detailed concept select studies and subsea engineering before formalising a final investment decision and field development plan.
