Story details

Iraq’s Ministry of Environment announced on 7 October 2026 that the country had launched its updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), coordinated with the United Nations Development Programme. The ministry said the document is intended to guide climate action through programmes and projects tied to national development priorities.

The ministry said the framework sets emissions-reduction goals through 2035 and covers energy, transport, buildings, industry, agriculture, forests and waste. Adaptation priorities include water, health and the country’s marshes and ecosystems. A statement on behalf of the prime minister described clean-energy expansion and improved water management as planned work; the announcement reports no completed measures or measured emissions reductions.
