ARERA said on 21 October that the European Commission had approved Italy’s request for a five-year derogation from parts of the EU gas network code at the Mazara del Vallo and Gela entry points. The decision, numbered C(2026) 6821, is effective from 5 August 2026.
The exemption preserves a residual-capacity allocation method based on first-come, first-served at the two points. ARERA said this supports efficient use and can avoid costlier short-term solutions; the release does not quantify consumer savings.
The Western Desert development is designed to process up to 100 million standard cubic feet of gas per day; start-up activity does not mean full production.
