Story details

Construction of a check dam has begun in Watapur district of Afghanistan’s Kunar province, according to a 10 October report by Bakhtar News Agency. The agency quoted Mawlavi Zainuddin Hussam, the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock’s director of water-supply development and engineering, who put the project cost at AFN 3 million and said it is funded through the ministry’s development budget.

Hussam said construction is expected to take three months. The ministry official projected that, once completed, the structure would provide irrigation water to 355 hectares of farmland and benefit 350 families. Those are expected future benefits, not current irrigation delivery or measured crop outcomes; the report gives no dam capacity or water-volume estimate.
