Story details
Vice President Kashim Shettima urged state governments to use the Electricity Act 2023 to establish functional intrastate electricity markets and attract private investment. Speaking at a stakeholders’ workshop in Abuja on October 21, he said the law enables states to tailor power markets to local needs but does not itself ensure better supply.
Shettima proposed a voluntary national peer-review framework involving NERC, the power ministry, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and state regulators. NERC representative Hauwa Yakubu said regulatory responsibilities had been transferred to 17 states, most recently Akwa Ibom. These are implementation proposals and a reported transfer count, not evidence that new state markets are already operational.
