Story details
Vulcan Energy Resources Limited announced the receipt of comprehensive environmental and operating permits from the State Mining Authority of Rhineland-Palatinate, granting regulatory authorization for Phase One commercial construction of its integrated geothermal renewable energy and direct lithium extraction project. The permit approval covers the production wells, geothermal brine distribution piping networks, and the central lithium adsorption processing plant located in the Landau district of southwestern Germany.
The Zero Carbon Lithium project aims to produce 24,000 tonnes of battery-grade lithium hydroxide monohydrate per year while simultaneously generating 275 gigawatt-hours of baseload renewable electricity and clean heating for local municipal district networks. High-temperature geothermal brines originating from the Buntsandstein reservoir at depths between 3,000 and 3,500 meters are pumped to surface, where thermal energy is extracted before direct adsorption technology captures lithium chloride without chemical evaporation ponds, returning chilled brine back into the subsurface formations via closed-loop reinjection wells.
Commercial financing for the 1.4 billion euro Phase One development is supported by European export credit agencies, the European Investment Bank, and strategic automotive offtakers including Stellantis, Volkswagen, and Renault Group under binding multi-year supply contracts. Vulcan noted that civil earthworks and well pad preparation at the Landau production site will commence immediately, with deep production drilling campaigns scheduled using specialized electric rigs to minimize surface noise and carbon emissions.
Executive management stated that securing binding environmental authorizations validates the rigorous engineering and ecological standards developed across three years of pilot plant operations. Domestic European lithium production is recognized under the Critical Raw Materials Act as a priority strategic endeavor to diminish reliance on vulnerable East Asian refining supply chains. Vulcan emphasized that co-producing zero-fossil geothermal electricity alongside battery-grade battery chemicals provides European automotive original equipment manufacturers with a fully traceable, low-carbon supply chain.
